If you seek a more in-depth orientation, join us for one of our Intro to Zen workshops.Īs part of our orientation, you will be shown a variety of postures, including sitting or kneeling using cushions or a bench or chair. Come 15 minutes early, let someone know it is your first time, and you will receive a brief orientation to our forms. Our intention is that you feel invited and included, and that much of the mystery that is perceived to be part of this practice is set aside.įeel free to just show up for any of our regular sitting periods. Participants at ALL levels of experience are always welcome. Please don't let unfamiliarity with meditation forms be a reason for not investigating Zen. Subdued colors are most supportive of practice. Our meditation sessions consist of opening with Chanting, then Sitting for two periods of 30-minutes each with a Walking period in between. When we chant, the singular voice interacts and merges with the group voice. Walking offers the opportunity to take the mind of practice into motion and movement, bridging the gap that can arise between experience on and off the cushion.Ĭhanting is a practice consistent worldwide among contemplative traditions. There are many postures appropriate for sitting practice-including kneeling on cushions or using a chair-so discomfort can be minimized. Sitting is the activity of stillness, of looking directly into the nature of the mind. In November 2019, her son Darnell “Booka” Woodard was killed during a drug deal. “We encourage people who are suffering from burnout, people who are out in the community, community members who suffered a loss – people who are looking for ways to just have some type of self-healing or reset.” In particular, she wants to help those who have been overstressed by the pandemic. Mays said the Zen Den exposes people to alternative healing methods. “It’s been there through some ups and downs of life,” Powell said. It’s made a difference in his life as he’s navigated challenges, he said. An artist himself, Powell has been making sketches and expressions since he was a young boy. Powell provides art training at the space across many mediums, including painting and drawing.
